Survival Kit for the Field, September 22, 1:00pm-2:30pm


The "Survival Kit for the Field" workshop will focus on many skills, trade secrets, and pointers for case managers and/or therapists to utilize in the field. Much of the information presented in this workshop will be grass roots tools collected and shared with you by a team of clinicians with over 40+ years of experience in the field collectively. Not only will these "trade secrets" be shared but also evidence based approaches that build and maintain rapport with clients, engagement skills, SMART goals, how to effectively deal with secondary trauma, self-care, issues of hygiene, safety in the field, do's and don’ts, and important things to look for when in the field.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will learn how to engage clients
  • Participants will learn how to keep themselves safe
  • Participants will learn the do's and don’ts of working in the field

Presenter Bios:

Shannon Smith, LMHC, is a Licensed Mental Health Therapist in the state of Indiana where she has been employed by George Junior Republic in Indiana for the past 21 years. Shannon gained her Masters in Counseling and Counselor Education from Indiana University in Bloomington. Shannon has worked as a therapist, group home supervisor, and now Senior Indiana Clinical Supervisor throughout her tenure with GJR. Shannon is devoted to home based services as the most beneficial approach in Mental Health for several populations. Shannon also is an adjunct professor at IUPUC teaching Introduction to Psychology, Professional Ethics, and Clinical Writing.

Janna Mallay is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Licensed Clinical Addictions Counselor who has been working at GJR since 2012. She began her tenure at GJR by providing independent living skill building services at the Columbus group home and upon her graduation with a MSW transitioned into the Columbus Group Home Treatment Team Coordinator role. She then joined the world of home based work as a therapist working with families in homes, restaurants, parks, rock walls, etc. She has training in EMDR, Motivational Interviewing, and has been credentialed in Functional Family Therapy and Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavior Therapy. Mallay has worked as a Clinical Supervisor for Home Based Case Managers and Therapists and currently is the Director of Possibilities with Older Youth Services and Addictions. Mallay enjoys creatively providing therapy and supervision along with home based work never unveiling a boring day.

Brandy Stark, LCSW is the Vice President of George Junior Republic in Indiana where she has been employed for the last 12 years. Brandy has been a case-manager, therapist, Older Youth Services case-manager, supervisor and director throughout her tenure with George Junior Republic. Prior to this, she was employed with DCS. Brandy has been credentialed in Trauma- Informed CBT and Functional Family Therapy. Brandy enjoys budgets, strategy, and finding ways to allow staff to develop while at the same time providing quality services.
