(Virtual) December 8th and 9th - Practicing Motivational Interviewing: Helping People with Substance Use Disorders Make Healthy/Helpful Changes

Note: This training will be conducted in a virtual environment. In order to ensure fidelity to the training, all participants will need to attend via a video chat where their video and audio are on and working.

In recognition of the virtual environment, we have split the one-day training into two half-days. Participants must be able to attend both days to receive CEH credit.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an Evidence Based Practice to assist folks who are ambivalent about change making healthy/helpful choices. MI has been recognized as a well-supported prevention intervention for keeping families where substance use disorder is an issue together.

In this interactive online experience, participants will learn: the indications for MI, the role of ambivalence as a barrier to change, how MI is particularly well suited when substance use is an issue, how MI helps with other valued healthy behaviors, how MI works to evoke Change Talk, the relational elements of the SPIRIT of MI, the 5 skills of MI, and additional conversations that evoke Change Talk.

There will be initial exposure to the 4 Processes of conversations about change and the management of Discord. This workshop is designed to offer opportunities to both learn and practice MI conversations. It is a great introduction to the practice for people new to MI and a refresher for people who are currently using MI with clients or supervising staff who are using MI.
